Livieri-Glaisher Duo: 'Schubert in the Pampas'
'So beautiful!' BBC RADIO 4 (Woman's Hour)
Known as 'the Schubert of the Pampas' by virtue of the superlative calibre, refinement and sheer volume of his vocal output, the Argentine composer Carlos Guastavino left behind a prolific catalogue of almost two hundred sumptuous and compelling art songs, making him Latin America's most outstanding and illustrious creator of lieder.
This programme offers a panorama of Argentina's greatest art songs, featuring Guastavino's delightful suite, the 'Flores argentinas' ('Argentine Flowers'), alongside other gems in the Argentine song repertoire by Guastavino's contemporaries: Aguirre, Gianneo, Ginastera, Gómez Carrillo, López Buchardo, Gilardi, Perceval, Piazzolla, Schiuma, Souviron and Williams. These songs weave a tantalising blend of classical song with the evocative Hispanic, Afro and Amerindian idioms of Argentine folk music, performed by one of Argentina's prima sopranos, Jaquelina Livieri, and British-Latinx pianist, Helen Glaisher-Hernández.
